Pharmacotherapy

Psychopharmacologic Treatment:

Treatment follows diagnosis. Pharmacotherapy, the use of medications, is used in conjunction with counsel to enhance the benefit for the patient’s specific diagnosis. It is not always indicated as a form of treatment; when it is, it should be focussed on relieving and preventing signs and symptoms of illness. It is adjusted to ensure that the medications prescribed do not interact with any other medications that the patient may be taking. It is adjusted to compensate or to not interfere with the treatment of any illnesses that the patient may have.

Many types of medications may be used in psychopharmacologic treatments:

      • Antidepressant medicines (Thymoleptics)
      • Anti Anxiety medicines (Anxiolytics, Ataractics, Minor Tranquilizers)
      • Mood Stabilizing medicines (Normothymics)
      • Stimulant medicines
      • Antipsychotic medicines (Major Tranquilizers)
      • Analgesic medicines
      • Potentiating medicines
